Who Are the Jumbies?
A world dance party in Iowa! A Caribbean-Soul version of a steel pan band from Trinidad, combined with Bob Marley, Santana, Marvin Gaye, and Fela Kuti on a beach in the Midwest! Jumbies takes the rhythm, energy and motion of traditional Afro-Caribbean musical styles such as Soca and Reggae, the vibrant sound of the steel pan, a high-energy funk backing band, and spins out a tasty cocktail of seriously danceable music. All who see them are quickly possessed by the spirit of Jumbies!
The members of Jumbies are very musically active. Symphony orchestras, world class drum and bugle corps, international percussion ensembles, countless recording sessions, and multiple touring schedules have taken the guys to just about every state in the U.S. as well as several different countries.
Jumbies blends sounds from multiple sources and areas of the world, making something new that still sounds familiar. Soca music from Trinidad and Tobago is the most prominent ingredient, but Funk, Afro-Cuban, Soul, Reggae, Blues, and Afrobeat all blend together to form dance-centric grooves and positive vibes.
When they’re not teaching privately, conducting orchestras, or instructing college music courses, the fellas can be heard playing with other ensembles, including Diplomats of Solid Sound, The Fez: A Tribute to Steely Dan, The Candymakers, The Uniphonics, Plastic Relations, Tropical Steel, The Laguna Beach Boys, Flying Pans Steel Band, Flash in a Pan, and Pan Rocks. Jumbies has released 2 full length albums, and has a 3rd in the works.
